Business Basics - Your People
If you are a business owner, it is because you came up with a great idea, product or service which you wanted to share with others and make a living. Then, you already have a competitive edge that others might not have. However, the question is why your great idea, product or service is struggling even when you have done the best you could. My quick and frank answer is your best might not be good enough.
Sometimes, we assume getting entirely involved in complexity of a business might be more appealing. That might bring you more customers and so on.
In the end of the day, it is the simple foundations that make a business great. Such as your people, the ones you are dealing with on a daily basis and your wider stakeholders like your suppliers. Review your relationships and observe your communication channels.
As a business owner or the boss, are your messages always clear or instead, you often confuse the audience? Do you give clear directions and do your employees realize your expectations? How about your suppliers and your customers, do they often come back and do more business with you?
The emphasis is on having the right tone in the right place. So, how can you make it happen?
I know these might be a bit challenging at first. But give them a go little by little.
- Your expectations need to be communicated well in advance by having honest conversations
- Your guidance and directions should be clear and in most cases easy to follow
- Your people need to feel they are contributing to your success. Then, give them that necessary feeling by constructive feedback and emotional incentives
- Make your people accountable by promoting the culture of “ We all win together or we don’t win it at all”
- Be open to suggestions and debates and don’t be afraid to be questioned by others. You will end up in a stronger position when you make the effort to defend your ideas
- Give your people the confidence to improve themselves and encourage them to go for gold because “encouragement strengthens and inspires”
And always remember “Relationships Enrich Your Success”
Best of luck,
